JP Morgan Demands Biometric Data for Main Office Admission

The banking leader has told employees assigned to its state-of-the-art main office in New York that they are required to provide their biological identifiers to access the multi-billion structure.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The investment bank had originally planned for the collection of physical identifiers at its recently opened skyscraper to be discretionary.

Yet, workers of the leading financial institution who have commenced employment at the new headquarters since this summer have obtained electronic messages stating that biometric entry was now "mandatory".

Understanding the Biometric System

Biometric access requires employees to submit their hand geometry to gain access access portals in the lobby in place of using their identification cards.

Building Specifications and Capacity

The main office building, which allegedly cost three billion dollars to develop, will eventually function as a base for thousands of workers once it is fully occupied later this year.

Safety Justification

JP Morgan did not provide a statement but it is believed that the employment of biometric data for entry is intended to make the building more secure.

Special Cases

There are exemptions for specific personnel who will still be able to use a traditional pass for admission, although the criteria for who will utilize more traditional ID access remains unclear.

Additional Technological Features

Complementing the implementation of physical identifier systems, the company has also released the "Work at JPMC" mobile app, which serves as a electronic pass and portal for employee services.

The app enables users to handle visitor access, use interior guides of the premises and schedule food from the facility's multiple food service providers.

Broader Safety Concerns

The introduction of stricter access protocols comes as US corporations, especially those with significant operations in New York, look to strengthen protection following the incident of the chief executive of one of the US's largest health insurers in recent months.

The CEO, the head of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot not far from the bank's location.

Additional Office Considerations

It is not known if the banking institution plans to deploy biometric access for staff at its locations in other key banking hubs, such as London.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The move comes amid controversy over the use of systems to observe staff by their organizations, including monitoring workplace presence.

Earlier this year, all the bank's employees on flexible arrangements were told they are required to come back to the physical location on a daily basis.

Executive Perspective

The bank's chief executive, the financial executive, has referred to JP Morgan's state-of-the-art tower as a "impressive representation" of the company.

Dimon, one of the influential banking figures, recently warned that the chance of the financial markets crashing was much more substantial than many financiers anticipated.
