Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Selection While Joe McCarthy Misses Out
Returning head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Caelan Doris in his Ireland team for the fall matches, however Joe McCarthy is absent.
The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue he sustained during the opening British and Irish Lions Test against the Wallabies in July.
Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are also absent due to injury, while number 15 Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation after the summer tour.
Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole uncapped member in the 34-player squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped western province wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their previous meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in the Irish capital.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced players and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," said Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Crowley will again vie for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, with Prendergast and Crowley poised to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC game at Croke Park.
Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.
At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained the national side to the summer international wins over the Lelos and the Lobos. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey represent an veteran cohort of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is additionally a frontrunner to cover for the full-back at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings over the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Ireland forwards. The loose-head prop has been in two of his province's URC league games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol earlier this year.
McCarthy was selected in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.
Southern province lock Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, while veteran Ulster lock Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for Doris if the skipper does not regain fitness in time to play the All Blacks.
